Age of Steam

#1 Post by the red soldier »

Warning, wall O text incoming!

Synopsis: In a nut shell, this is a open ended steampunk RP. Humanity has entered a golden age were technology flourishes in all forms and shapes as the Republic of Theria thrives in wealth and power. You start in the trading city of Vezuli, a city famous for having traders coming from as far as the deserts of Nehelop to trade. Good enough reason for the many races and peoples to be in or around the city. PS, there is magic.

World of Ylena

Image

Summary:
Not much is known past 5000 years ago, a major catastrophe accurred wich layed ruined to most of the world of Ylena, the servants (Angels) would have you believe it was the final battle between Muortaire and the Goddess but we men of science know better then that! Humanity has always been without magic, no matter what those bird brains keep spouting, magic is for those elves and shaman from the Salvanen forests not for proper civilised men! No, humanities strengh lies within clockwork, machine, steam and science! This is the Age of steam my brothers and sisters, the Golden age of Humanity!

Religious Background:
There once was a time, a brother and sister witnessed the death of the Goddess of life at the hands of nether Queen Mare. Upon her death, the Goddess made one last act, an act of desperation so that hope lives on and gave the sister the secret of life, thus she grew wings and became the first of the angelic figures known as the servants and the brother the secret of death, thus giving him a magical scythe and becoming the first of the reapers. Mare, in a fit of anger, tried to possess the older brother but it proved to be her downfall as she underestimated the brothers dark soul, proving to be darker then the Nether Queens herself. This though changed the brother from his intended role as a reaper as he grew darker then the Goddess thought possible.

The new creature that walked the surface of the earth called itself Muortaire, his mere footsteps plagued the land into endless chaos as his corruption spread into the peoples hearts. His power limitless, his influence never ending, he held the world between his fingertips but was struck down by his sister, the only one Muortaire truly trusted. But to the sisters horror, Muortaire's very soul refused to enter the nether and the sister had no choice but to sacrifice her own life to guarantee Muortaire's evil would be banished from the world once and for all. Humanity was so moved by the sisters selflessness that humanity as a whole sacrificed there links to the magical winds so the sister could ascend to the heavens, becoming the new goddess of life.

Ever sense, the name of the sister was removed from all text and forgotten, less anyone use the goddesses name in vain. As for humanity, there links to magic was severed, never able to use magic again but there sacrifice was not forgotten as the prosperity of the human race was guaranteed for years to come.

(This is the primary religion of most nations in the shown map above)

Of course, on the other side lies the Genies, beings of pure magic which rules over the endless deserts, were life started and were life will end for no one knows how the deserts of Nehelop can bring life or death like the Genies. The people whom worship the Genies claim that this false Goddess and her imaginary brother were nothing more then powerfull wizards who killed eachother for greed and power.

Deities

The Goddess: The current Goddess is the second Goddess of Life to have existed. The primary worshipped deity in the land, she is said to be kind, loving and forgiving. She is said to love life in all its forms, no matter if they worship her or not. The servants are the ones most connected to her. Most humans follow the teachings of the Goddess.

Muortaire: He laughs at you misery, he laughs at your pain because for Muortaire, everythings a game. Muortaire is the brother of the Goddess herself if the teachings are to be believed. Often called the ringmaster by the people of Theria sense he is often seen in depictions leading his evil circus of damned souls. No one overtly worships Muortaire but small cults can be found here and there. One thing about Muortaire to note, he is the most active in the physical world and his worshippers tend to be madly insane and strife with magical mutations. His realm is referred to as the Cirque de la Morr. His followers also tend to have a clownish look to them, dressing up in odd costumes and makeup, as if going to a circus or a carnival.

Nether Queen Mare: Were Muortaire is chaotic Evil, Mare would be considered Lawfull Evil. Queen of the Netherworld, she used to be worshipped by most humans but when she failed to cast down Muortaire, she lost major Influence within her own realm as Muortaire started taking top spot. In an attempt to stop Muortaires influence, Mare split the Netherworld in two, one part for Muortaire and one part hers. Eversense the split, Mare was seen as just a minor Goddess by those who still know about her. The Dark Elves of the Salvanen forest still openly worship the Nether Queen even in her weakened state.

The Genies: Not very well known in the lands of Ylena, the Genies are magic Incarnate and are worshipped as Gods By the Nomads from the deserts of Nehelop. The stronger Genies are said to rival the Goddess or Muortaire in terms of sheer power.

Others: There are many others, the Elves and the beastmen worship there own respective gods and Goddesses but they are to many to count. The Czardom and Autocracy also has different little religions isolated to there nations.

Nations (This is to set the setting most then anything else and give ideas for characters)

The Republic of Theria: The Clockwork Republic as they call it, the Republic of Theria is the technological capital of the world and the richest nation to have ever existed. Experiencing a Golden age even though they are in a state of Cold War agaisn't the Czardom, the Republic has been the leading figure in terms of technology and machinery. The Capital of Ther goes on to prove the Republics skills in Architect and engineering, litteraly build on a frozen waterfall. Then comes the City of Vezuli, the golden throne as its often called, a city rich with trade to the point of bursting. The city is practically a giant open market were one can find just about anything. The cold war with the Czardom has actually helped the economy even more as mercs, soldiers and bounty hunters from across the lands flooded the city for a chance of being hired for the fronts. Also famous for the Republican Clockwork Legions, soldiers equipped with the best weaponry the world has to offer. Majority humans.

Czardom of Ziev: A totalitarian state controlled by the Czaress, The Czardom have beenspreading and conquering near everything they have come into contact with. Its only when they finally hit the Republics border have they grinded into a halt, there armies outclassed and outgunned by the Republics. Majority humans, differing races used as slaves.

Holy Isles of the Goddess: The homeland of the servants, angelic beings of magical prowess, these are the holy lands were the teachings of the Goddess started over 5000 years ago. Majority servants (Angels)

Salvanen forests: A grand mystical forest filled with to many Clans and tribes to count. Elf Clans and beastmen tribes seems to be the dominant races but you cannot discount the many others whom lives within these magical lands. They have slowly but suraly been driven from there lands by the ever expanding Czardom to the north whom see the elves and the beastmen as nothing more then potential slaves. Majority elves and Beastmen (Furries and Nekos) and numberless other races (Lizardmen, Gnomes, dark elves, dryads etc)

Mount Agony: Ruled by a powerfull Architect and engineer known as lord Agonius, these lands are devoid of life, replaced instead by the living clockwork machines of his own twisted design. Some say he is slowly building himself an army to get vengeance agaisn't the Republic for exiling him. Majority Machines and clockwork creatures.

Leron: A nation in a state of civil war, these feudal lands have never progressed past the medievalesque era. Still using bows and swords, they are mostly famous for there knights and chevaliers. Majority human

Deserts of Nehelop: Vast lands of deserts and steppes populated by Nomadic tribes, these lands are said to be filled with magic thanks to the God like Genies that occupy them. Somewhere in the vastness of the desert is said to be a magical floating city of Genies, were life began and were life will end if the Genies wills it. In the past ignored for being primitives by the Republic, the genies march has proved to the Church of the Goddess and the Republic that the Genies wrath can be a harsh one. There is a form of culture war between the desert inhabitants and the Republic, were one worships magic and the other technology. (Ignore the crashing ship in the beginning, also the Republic won that war albeit at a heavy price) Majority human nomads worshipping the Genies, can also find lizardmen and other sentient creatures.

Autocracy of Kria: Little is known about the northen Islands sense they have isolated themselves from the rest of the world. Most vessels and flying machines sent to try to get in contact have disapeared and further attempts were discourage.

Races: Races has already been talked about in the nations section but I will set a few rules. Humans cant use magic with exception of being a fanatical follower of Muortaire, that means your technically insane. Half humans/elves have some magical abilities but not as powerfull as there elven counterparts. The beastmen (Furries) and the halfbreeds (nekos) also have magical abilities. The servants, although the extremely vast majority of them worship the Goddess, not all of them actually worship her, some can be seen doing other things then being a winged preacher. Any race you can think of will probably be allowed, angels, demons, any form of halfbreeds, as long as they fit the setting.

RULES
  • No god modding.
  • Put an effort into you post, please try to avoid one liners.
  • No character limits, go nuts.
  • Normal RP rules, we all know em.

This looks like it's going to be sweet. Question though, what kind of weapons can we have?

Anything that fits a steampunk setting. Firearms, small clockwork pets, gunblades, tesla gun. portable Gatling gun? Yep. Of course, these tend to be people from the Republic. If you are from Leron for example, you could be an armoured knight in shining armor so heavy that it literally deflects bullets or be from the tribes of the Salvanen forest were you use bows and arrows, axe and swords but are able to use magic.

As long as it isn't an overt advance weapon like a laser blaster or plasma gun, anything is open.

Good to see some interest.

Also, dont worry about the many nations, there just there for background purposes.

________________________________________________________________

Appearance: Look at that pretty smile of his!

Image

Name: Muortaire

age: some 5000+ years old.

Gender: Male

Race: Darkness Incarnate

Equipment: Like he needs any.

Skills: He's practically a God, although limited in the realm of the living.

Personality: Psychotic and demented, he created paranoia and Phobia. He doesn't tell rumors and myths, he creates them. If the dark Queen Mare is to be feared, Muortaire is to be dreaded as the end of days.

Bio: Although the ancient teachings claim that Mare's tried to possess Muortaire which drove him mad, the truth of the matter is that it is Muortaire that summoned Mare's and tried to take her place in the netherworld. He failed but it only delayed the inevitable as his will completely overshadowed Mare's when he reached the Netherworld. Now the Ringmaster of the never ending Circus of damned souls, le Cirque de la Morr, Muortaire exists as a bane to everything decent in the world as he views everything and anything as toys to play with until it breaks, which includes the world of Ylena.

Misc:Although the Ringmaster Muortaire cant physically walk in the mortal realm, he has powerfull demons known as ringleaders who often leads small cults in Muortaires place. In the Cirque de la Morr, although its a hellish carnival, only Muortaire can be heard laughing, the rest are cries of pain, agony and madness. If there is any theme song that would explain Muortaire, This would be it. Also this because it just scream demonic circus!

Depictions: Sense he's a form of deity, Muortaire has been depicted in several different ways that some areas (like the Salvanen forest for example) view him differently. The republic of Theria view him as a Well dressed man wearing a mask, usually holding a cane. In the arts and mythology museum of Vezuli, an art piece shows Muortaire overlooking his circus. The Czardom, although they dont believe him to be a god, do see him as a powerful demon, there view on him is demonic jester wielding an oversized scythe. The Elf Clans of the Salvanen forests has the most radical view of Muortaire, they actually believe that Muortaire is a female jester of sorts with a third eye on her forehead, calling him "she who should not be named". The church of the Goddess tend to believe in a similar version as the Republic.

_______________________________________________________________

Appearance:
Image

Name: Czir Corvani

age: 24

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Equipment: Walking cane which is in fact a shotgun and also has a hidden blade.

Skills: Skilled travelling merchant, has seen much in his travels across the lands. Good with money. Also knows how to use standard military equipment of several nations.

Personality: A decent man who will often do what he feels to be the right thing, Czir can be a bit greedy though at times. Hates Genies. Czir isn't afraid to do what needs to be done at the end of the day when the going gets tough, his years fighting the Genies armies has made him almost fearless. (Fighting giant glass golems and genies that turn people into ash by just whispering a few words will do that to you)

Bio: Czir was born and raised in the capital of Ther in a noble and well known family. During his childhood, he went to the most prestigious schools and colleges available in all of Theria. Everything turned on its head though when the Genie march occured and even though he was nobility, they were so strapped for recruits that he was drafted. The Genies attack on Ther almost destroyed the city but the valiant defence managed to push the genies magical armies back to the deserts but at great cost for the Republic. As for Czir, he was crippled permanently when he was cought in one of the genies magical spells which turned men into glass statues, although not directly hit, most of his skin on the right side of his body was turned into an unbreakable glass substance. Because of this he now walks with a cane.

His estate burned to the ground because of the war and his nobility stripped away, Czir could only do what he was good at and that was becoming a low end merchant. Now he travels the land, buying and selling wherever he goes, often using his veteran statues to his advantage to get special deals. Czir is currently hold up in Vezuli were one can spend months at a time simply buying from one booth and selling it to another at the other side of the city.

Misc: Czir wears a vizor of sorts to help him see through his right eye, without it, he wouldn't be able to see from it.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Appearance:

Image

Name: Lily Lamperouge

age: 19

Gender: Female

Race: Servants

Equipment: A small baton of sorts of magical abilities.

Skills: Can fly, capable of basic white magic (Healing, cure curses and whatnot) and capable of using the light of the goddess to banish evil spirits.

Personality: Quirky and sometimes annoying, she doesn't act like a noble servant of the goddess like the rest of her kind. Often playful and wouldn't harm a fly

Bio: Born in the Holy Isles, Lily was always a sort of outcast amongst the servants, were the others forgoe there lives in service of the Goddess, Lily wanted nothing more then to fly freely amongst the birds. When she came of age, Lily simply flew away, the servants may be a bit restrictive but they didn't force any of there kind into servitude, they simply recommended it. Before leaving however, they told her a clear warning, you would no longer be safe from the darkness of mens hearts if you leave the church and we will not be there to help you from the ever watching shadows, this is the price of freedom. Lily knew full well they were talking about Muortaire or Mare but ignored it, not actually believing them to be that real of a threat, afterall, she never saw signs of either of them actualy existing.

Its been a year sense then and even though her status alone as a servant got her a bit far, she's now keeping an eye for the shadows, getting the feeling that she is being watched, even so far as seing a strange being watching her one second and disappearing the next, never able to actualy make it out completely. Lily though simply discounts it as her imagination. For over 3 months now she has been travelling with a crippled noble who has been down on his luck, she offered the noble to try and heal his glass like skin but he refused, simply saying it keeps his memories alive.

Misc: Lily does believe in the Goddess but just isn't part of the church like the rest of the servants.

I AM SO IN!

but first I gotta think of a good character..

EDIT:

I think I start my character sheet. won't complete it however.

Appearance:linked due to size.
I didn't want to take this guy really because people may think he was the guy in the mech and bridge. he wasn't. but there weren't any decent other one's available. his beard is black and he doesn't have that scar either.
Name: Marcus Velera
age: 25
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Equipment:
adaptable gun frame* (size large pistol), armour he's wearing, two combat knifes, random spare parts in his backpack, toolset, survival kit.
Skills:
Marcus is an average soldier at best, but he has been noted as a genius inventor and technician, he can take almost anything and built something working with it, he seems to instinctively grasp it, which is strange, as he's the son of a simply mechanic/smith, and never got the required education that would be needed. he even constructed his highly adaptable weapon*, and always thinkers at it in his free time or if there isn't anything else around. today its maybe a simple rifle, tomorrow it could be a gatling, then a big shotgun pistol, a tesla rifle on the next day. sometimes he even combines things. while working, he seems to be completely cut off from everything else, like a clank, and its very hard to bring him back from that stupor.
Personality:
Marcus is a normal, logical thinking and smart man that is unbiased and trustworthy, but can get quite violent at times. he's a bit of a loner too, and will leave you alone until you approach him. however, some things don't add up, his paranoid actions: always wearing armour and the survival kit, but if you talk to him he seems trusting enough. he doesn't have any required education and doesn't understands any technical terms, but creates miraculous devices most mechanics would give their limbs for. the secret is: Marcus is insane. he hears voices in his head, who tell how things work, what to do, how to do it, warn him and point things out, the voices often saved his life in the Genie assault, where they appeared... the drawback is, however, if Marcus doesn't satisfy the voices by building something, or discovering something, or travelling somewhere new, they'll get angry. that happened once, and Marcus doesn't want that to happen again, EVER. so he built his weapon to keep them quiet and helpful.
Bio:
Marcus Velera, the son of a smith was raised without allot of education, just the things his father taught him about steam engines and metals. he was working under his father so that he can take the place in the future, as the Genie assault came, and he was forced into the army.
there, amongst the burning debris, dragons and glass monsters and godly genies, just a small trooper, a number on papers, a dot on the tactical map, he had a mental breakdown, and then he first heard the voices, and obeying being drilled into his head at that point, he followed their orders, took out several golems, repaired and improved his broken rifle, and survived the day without many scars. the genies retreated back to the desert, but the voices stayed.
after the war, nothing much remained, his fathers workship had been destroyed, his family killed with it. there was nobody left, and he became insane and heard voices in his head! the voices brought him back to his senses as he tried to commit suicide. eventually, he built the shop back up, and now runs 'Mr. Velera's workshop', repairs stuff, builts stuff on request... it hasn't been going well, and the voices are getting bored to sit around in Vezuli...
Misc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5l7EN5S ... re=related
I like this song, its a good methaphor, his insanity and violence is very well hidden, till it breaks out and becomes evident...
but it isn't really fitting either..
This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

I can't pass this opportunity up.

Appearance:(multiple pictures for better views) Image
Name:Makoto Enjeru
Age:76
Gender:Male
Race:Elf
Equipment:Sword (secret gun-blade,holds 10 rifle rounds. Semi-Automatic)
Skills:Fire and Lightning magic
Personality: Sarcastic,talkative,serious only when necessary
Bio:Makoto lived in the Salvanen forests for most of his life but moved back to
The Republic of Theria with his parents after he learned his magic. From then on he was
a mercenary just doing a lot of random contracts to make money for him and his family.
Misc: This is written on his arm as a sign that he is a member of the Enjeru family. גמד

Appearance:Image
Name:Lloyd Enjeru
age:65 (looks like he's 16-ish)
Gender:Male
Race:Angel/Elf (Half breed, awww yeah!)
Equipment:Morning Star (has a chain inside to turn it into a flail, and when in flail form the head
can be launched off as a bomb to explode in a small-ish radius) (has two heads for it) Shield
Skills:healing magic and advanced mechanical knowledge (not advanced to the time period, but more advanced than the average mechanic)
Personality:talkative,sometimes childish,doesn't trust pure-breed angel's almost at all
Bio:Lloyd was cast out of the Holy Isles of the Goddess for not being a "pure" breed of
angel, his mother does not live there anymore because she was cast out for bearing children
for an "unjust" man. After the confusion he moved back to The Republic of Theria where his
parents lived, though they aren't human they were looking for work so they moved there.Lloyd
then took normal classes in a college to become a engineer, which to him was something that
even a half-breed could earn money doing even considering he isn't even part human. After he
graduated, which most of the humans in his class were surprised of, he got a job working at a
clockwork shop, there he simply dis-assembled mechanic items to make sure they were okay
and not in need of repair and such.

If anyone has problems finding pic, I found this album full of cool characters that I've used on several occasions.

Also, major announcement.

There are more nation then what is posted, if you want to be some kind of travellers from a far away land that is completely foreign then go for it (Samurais and ninja's come to mind) In fact, on the map there was originaly an Island called the Red Blossom Shogunate that was basically steampunk samurai's and Ronin but I removed it when I refined the setting (Also removed 3 other nations on the map, the desert of Nehelop wasn't that big in the original map design)

EDIT: Also, Ranalf, your avatar is awesome, surprised I havent noticed it yet.
