============================================================= Chapter 1

Quiet, have to be quiet! The thought was repeated over and over in her mind. What should I do? Her thoughts were racing again. So many possibilities, all useless.

“why would the humans do this?...how?..”

a small sob escaped her lips, but her hand held the rest in. she finally calmed down enough to gather up her thoughts. I have to get out of here. Far away. But to where? She decided she would find out later. She just ran as fast as possible, Dodging branches and bushes alike. Finally she fell to ground exhausted, her legs refusing to even twitch. “ need....air...*gasp*...ground...feels....niiiicce...”

she awoke the next morning, the light shining down through the cracks in the green canopy overhead. She sat up, rubbing her face and straightening her fur. What happened yesterday? Was her first thought and She immediately regretted ever thinking about it, as the memories came flooding back to her. She was soon looking around, trying to rid her self of the images. The greens and browns melded together, peace and tranquility overwhelmed here senses. She liked it. Everywhere she looked there was a different color, unlike the sea, which was one huge wall of blue with a gray outcropping of rock every now and then. What am I thinking! My family was just murdered in front of my eyes and all that I think about is how pretty it is out here! She looked down, but quickly looked around, a familiar scent filling her nose.
Humans! They followed me? No! She immediately scrambled under some brush, taking great pains to not make a noise. Just as she settled in, a black-robed figure ran out into the clearing. He was breathing heavily and it looked like he held something tightly in his arms. Whats that in his arms? She couldn't resist, she had to know. Disregarding all common sense she slowly crawled toward the source of her curiosity.

Come on Ava just a little further! He held her tightly, afraid if even for a second he let go, she would be lost to him forever. She's going to die, and you can't save her! The cruel voice rang in his head as clearly as if it had been spoken in his ear. He stopped immediately, looking down at the small girl in his arms. No I will save her! Get out of my head keidran! He shouted back. Laughter resonated back at before being abruptly cut off. Good, that damn spell finally ended. He had finally out ran his tormenters, but the happy feeling died quickly as he looked down at Ava. “Ava, you still awake?” he whispered. She looked up at him, slowly nodding. “good, just hold out a bit longer, we're almost there.” she continued to stare at him, a look that told him his lie had been seen through. “no...jeremy, please just...set...” jeremy held a finger up to lips. He slowly set her down.“I'm sorry Ava, I couldn't s-save you.”the words caught in his throat, tears streaming down his face with each syllable. Ava smiled weakly at him “don't worry Jem, I'm just glad you've given me a few more minutes of life” how could she be so calm with death? He thought. I guess watching so many die around you kinda prepares you for this time in your life, even at such a young age. I just wish I was there when they first struck. He replayed the images in his head, punishment for being away from his family when they needed him most. He was so deep in thought he almost didn't notice the rustling in the bushes. Almost. He jumped towards the sound, turning around in mid-flight to tackle the keidran as she stood up to run. Jeremy crashed into her, dropping her frail form to the ground. His left hand quickly wrapped itself around her neck, while he used the other hand to pick her up and slam her against the nearest object. she put up little resistance. “jeremy don't hurt her!” Ava cryed. Jeremy's grip immediately loosened but he still didn't let go. “Why?! She might ...kill...” his voice trailed off, knowing full well that was the inevitable.
He let go of the keidran to look at Ava. Those four words had drained her of all the energy she had left.
Her breath was labored, coming in short quick bursts. What have I done? I've just wasted the last few moments of her life. He immediately remembered the carnage he had just ran from, this time with greater clarity, but he saw that this wouldn't do. Wheres my sword? He glanced around quickly, but couldn't see it Never mind I'll find it later. He sat down next to Ava, lightly stroking her hair. he nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw the keidran kneeling just on the opposite side of him. He glared at her, but she only ignored him. His anger welled up at the keidran's ignorance, but quickly calmed himself. Why does Ava care about her? He just noticed he really hadn't paid any attention to what she looked like. She was a fox with black tipped ears and tail, a white line separated the black from the red. her hands and feet were solid white everything else was red fur. Even though her expression was blank, Her dark green eyes held a glint of curiosity as well as..sadness? Why would she care about a stranger? Just then, he felt a tug at his sleeve. He looked down to see Ava raise her hand feebly. “Ok Ava, I'll leave you alone” it pained him to even have to look away from her, but if that's what she wanted that's what she shall get. He slowly stood up, still eyeing the keidran, and moved out of earshot.

The keidran watched as jeremy moved away from them. He's very obedient, or maybe he just respects the dieing. “keidran, can you speak human?” startled at hearing her language,she looked down at the sick girl. “can you speak human?” Ava repeated. The keidran nodded. “good, that's all I can say anyway” Ava managed a laugh at that, even though it was more like a wheezy cough. “whats your name?” the kiedran looked at her curiously. “Mia” Ava quickly pointed at jeremy, with more energy then before. “see him? He's not so bad. But he's going to be soon. he needs someone to help him. He thinks its his fault for the death of our village.” Mia continued to stare at the peculiar girl. “ and I also know your village was destroyed only yesterday.” now Mia was surprised. “how did you know?” Ava just smiled, as if it would reveal all secrets. “doesn't matter. You have no home, neither does he. My last wish is this. Please stay with him. You would be safe with him, nothing short of a dragon will kill him.”
Mia was deep in thought now. Why should I go with him? Maybe I should. He doesn't look all that bad.
He looked over this way every now and then. He playing with his shaggy brown hair, his dark blue eyes taking in everything around him. His expression was one of pain. “so what will it be?” Ava asked.
Why should I trust her? I don't know what to do! Mia looked around anxiously, instinctively sniffing the air. Hmm, other keidran?they aren't from my tribe. “LOOKOUT! Behind you!” Mia turned around just as a spear whistled right by her, grazing her shoulder. Jeremy was standing over them in a second, deflecting another spear. “ stay behind me!” he shouted. Two keidran came rushing forward, both wolf and both brandishing swords. “ move Ava away from here, now! But be sure to stay near.” jeremy whispered. The two keidran, knowing their advantage lunged forward, their swords leading the way. Jeremy, no novice, quickly knocked the weapons out wide, and slashed at the one on the right. The one on the left quickly came forward, trying to parry Jeremy's sword, only to be met by his fist. He fell back, dazed. The Right one managed to parry but the awkward position left him open. Jeremy took the opportunity and quickly stabbed forward, his sword going all the way through his chest and out his back. Mia stared at jeremy and what he had just done, amazed that he didn't do that to her in the first place. The other wolf finally recovered and came rushing at him, thinking his opponent off guard. Right before the wolf swung at him jeremy dropped to the ground, the wolfs sword imbedding itself in the tree behind him. Jeremy stood up slowly, knowing his opponents mistake. “so you think you can just kill my friends and family and get...away...with it? Ha! prepare for pain.” as he ended the sentence he drove his sword right into the wolfs heart. “die beast, die.” he whispered to the dying creature before smashing its face in. Mia knew what she would do now. She turned to talk to Ava but found that she was already dead, that all-knowing smile still on her face.

===============================================================Chapter 2

Jeremy refused to speak after the fight, instead setting all his energy into digging Ava's grave. A few hours later she was laid to rest and a small cairn erected for her. The light hours were almost done, so jeremy began setting up camp. Mia sat under a tree, watching intently as he went about the tasks. She still felt a little uneasy, being so close to a human. He clearly wasn't going to hurt her, but there was still things he could do to her without actually touching her. He was starting to act weirdly, too. He kept glancing around or biting his nails. Something is making him nervous she thought. She continued to watch, but her mind was else where. “Mia, are you hungry?” his voice caught her by surprise, but not her stomach. It growled its response and if not for her fur, her face would be a bright red. Fortunately he didn't hear her stomach. She nodded slowly, the uneasy feeling telling her not to speak. He was soon rummaging through his pack, pulling out a small, wrapped package. He had a fire going and two fish simmering on a rock slab. Now that he had nothing to do, he started pacing around the fire. He was muttering something under his breath, something she soon found heard as he passed by her. Damn keidran. The world around became blurry and a few seconds, when everything became clear again, she was holding the front of Jeremy's robes and had him pushed up against a tree, a look of astonishment on his face.
“What did you call me!” she screamed. He just sat there, still trying to figure out what happened. “wh-what d-did I d-do?” he finally stammered.

“why did you call me a damn keidran!”

“oh, well I umm c-can explain that! Just put me down.” she was hesitant to put him down but gradually she lowered him gently, still glaring at him.
“I'm sorry if you thought I was calling you that.”he said, too ashamed to make eye contact with her. “you want an explanation so here it is. Four years ago my family was killed by a keidran raid. I was out in the woods when they struck. The whole town had been burned to the ground. My parents were already...dead when I found them.” his voice quivered at the mention of his parents but he continued. “i was an orphan, a new law put out by the Templar made any orphan illegal. I was soon caught and relocated to my nearest relatives, my grandparents, just a few miles away.”
“i had never met them before, but they cared for me like my parents did before them. A year later, another keidran raid took their lives as well. The only difference was that I witnessed what happened this time. I ...didn't cope with it very well.” his eyes glistened with wetness but he kept It held in check. Mia looked down, ashamed of herself. He had lost more then she ever has had and she just attacked him for saying two words not even aimed at her. He was even protecting her in human territory and giving her a free meal. Why is he so nice to me? “Jeremy, you don't have to say any more. I...I'm sorry for attacking you.” she whispered.
“ No, I should be the one who's sorry. I had no right for saying that out loud.” he responded. “here, the foods ready.” he handed a small plate to her, both of the fish on it. She stared at him, clearly confused.
“I'm guessing you hadn't had anything to eat since two day ago. And you are a carnivore right? I have some bread in my pack, you need this more then I do.” he smiled, happy to make others lives better.

Jeremy's smile was soon replaced by confusion as she started to sob. “Whats wrong Mia?” he asked, worried that he once again screwed up.
“Why can't you be mean to me like everyone else!” she yelled, tears soaking her fur. Before he could respond, she was running through the bushes. “ so jeremy, you have a new girlfriend, huh?” the disembodied voice inquired. Jeremy's anger flared up in seconds. “you! You're the one who caused this!” he screamed back at him. “me? You're the one who was treating her nicely. It really doesn't matter anyway. She'll be dead soon enough!” his eyes widened in fear “ y-you wouldn't dare!”
laughter echoed through his mind. “oh, but I would!” and with that, the voice's presence was gone.

Mia stumbled along. the burning tears blinded her. Horrible memories bubbled to the surface in their wake.“she's only a keidran, do what ever you must to train her!” her former human master screamed, as she tried to disappear, an impossible feat where she was concerned. The other human's hand came up, as she closed her eyes waiting for the pain to come and go.
Another memory toke the others place.“hey look, its Vixen!” three small keidran children ran up to her, each wielding a handful of sand behind their backs. “what do you guys want?” Mia asked, oblivious to the act about to be commited. “ well Vixen, we were just going to say sor-” the boys to the left and right of the one speaking threw their handfuls at her, then grabbed hold of her arms. The middle one came forward, smirking. “now why would we say sorry to someone like you? You are nothing!” and with that she closed her eyes again, waiting for the pain. She stopped running then, spying a big, hollow tree and a place to hide. She crawled in slowly, trying her hardest not to make any noise. It all just a cruel trick, he wants nothing more then to hurt me. She whimpered, quite done with crying. She knew what being an orphan was like, teased by all with no reprieve. That whole story was probably a lie. But what if he had been telling the truth? Why would he be so nice if he has lost so much. She couldn't stop thinking about it. The memories came flitting back once more.“ you are so USELESS!” her mother screamed. Her father, already 18, was nearing his end. “she isn't useless! She just isn't old enough to understand!” he said, his voice wheezy. He always tried to defend her, but he was old now and she was barely two. She shook her head, trying to rid herself of the pain. Her ears perked up, the sound of twigs being snapped not to far away. She peeked out from the entrance, slowly searching the area. A few feet away stood jeremy, gasping for breath. “Mia, where are you?” he whispered, worry following every word. “I...I don't want to be alone again...” she watched him, silently berating herself. She walked out the of the tree then, surprising Jeremy. He rushed up to her, embracing her tightly and all the while saying “you aren't dead! You aren't dead!”over and over again. After a few seconds he realized that was the reason she had ran away and quickly let go “I'm sorry! I won't be so nice if-” he stopped mid sentence, finally figuring out she hadn't let go. “lets go back to camp, I'll warm the food up again”
